An Olympic bar is a simple piece of equipment. But it still has some specifications that you should understand before buying one.
types of dumbbells
People commonly refer to any bar that is at least 7 feet long and has 2-inch-wide rotating sleeves as an Olympic bar. But several dumbbells have these qualities, including Olympic, strength, and all-purpose dumbbells.
Olympic weightlifting bar
Manufacturers design this type of bar expressly for the official sport of weightlifting (as defined by theInternational Weightlifting Federation[IMF]). Manufacturers optimize these bars for snatches and cleans, the two movements performed in competitive powerlifting.
Single beams tend to be very "whippy" (the term used to describe how much the beam vibrates). These bars also have fast turning smooth sleeves and moderate to aggressive knurling.
Only competition bars always have a central boss, but many training bars do not.
energy bar
Powerbars, also called powerlifting bars, are used in powerlifting. Manufacturers make power bars for lifters to use for the big 3 lifts (squat, bench press, and deadlift).
A competition energy bar must meet theseInternational Weightlifting Federation(IPF). Still, many versions of training energy bars have more variations in specifications.
Power Bars are very stiff with little to no lash. Most strength bars have aggressive teeth and sleeves with less rotation than an Olympic bar. Most energy bars have a medium notch.

As their name suggests, multipurpose dumbbells, sometimes calledcrossfitDumbbells are a good choice when you want to do various types of exercises, including powerlifting and weightlifting.
These all-purpose dumbbells often have notched markings that meet IWF and IPF standards. Sometimes these bars have a center bulge, but usually there is no center bulge.
All-purpose dumbbells have a moderate shake quality and smooth rotating sleeves that fall between Olympic and strength dumbbells in terms of rotation speed.
Weight
Men's Olympic dumbbells weigh 20 kg (44 pounds), or sometimes 45 pounds. The same applies regardless of whether the bar is a single, power, or multi-purpose bar.
Olympic bars for women weigh 15 kg (around 33 pounds) or sometimes 35 pounds.
Beware of Oly bars weighing more than 45/35lbs as this could indicate a poor quality product.

Standard lengths for men's and women's Oly bars are around 7 feet. If you want an IWF rated Oly competition bar, the sizes should be 2200mm and 2010mm for men and women respectively.
Power and utility bars may vary slightly in size, but we recommend sticking to the 7-foot measurement.

In general, the higher the tensile strength of a rod, the less it vibrates. But other aspects of a bar also contribute to its impact.
We recommend finding an Oly bar with a minimum tensile strength of 190,000 PSI.

There are many versions, each with its own qualities. Here are some of the most popular options:
plain steel
A natural or bare steel bar is simply an unfinished carbon steel bar. Raw steel bars have a more natural grip when knurled and are less expensive than finished bars.
Raw steel, on the other hand, rusts quickly and requires regular maintenance.
stainless steel
The stainless steel bars are unfinished. However, because they use stainless steel instead of carbon, they are more resistant to rust.
Unfinished stainless steel barbells are significantly more expensive than unfinished carbon steel bars.
black oxide
Black oxide is a fine finish that only slightly improves the oxidation resistance of an Oly bar compared to pure steel. Black oxide requires regular maintenance, especially if it scratches the bar a lot.
However, compared to thicker finishes like zinc, black oxide retains the original grip quality of the handlebar knurling.
zinc
The zinc finishes on the dumbbells are available in clear or black versions. The main difference is purely aesthetic, but some lifters find black zinc to have a less natural hold than clear zinc.
Zinc resists rust, but not as well as chrome, cerakote, or stainless steel. The zinc finished Oly handlebar can be a good compromise between performance and affordability.

Manufacturers finish some of their dumbbells with satin or rough chrome. Oly chrome bars are highly resistant to rust. Chrome is also resistant to fading, chipping, and scratching.
A chrome bar has a natural grip, but if the bar only has light to medium knurling, you may want a heavier grip.
Chromium is more expensive than zinc or black oxide, but it's worth it.
Cerakote
The Cerakote finish has recently gained popularity and has become the preferred choice of many lifters. Cerakote allows many different colors and designs to be used in a single bar.
When it comes to performance, the Cerakote is like chrome. It is highly resistant to rust and abrasion, providing a firm grip and improving the overall durability of the Olympic bar.
Migration
The knurling is the three-dimensional engraving cut into the bar to give firmness to the hands. The knurling/gripping is not standardized and is highly preferred. Your best bet is to try to get a specific bar to test the knurling before buying.
There are three basic knurling styles: mountain, volcano, and flat.
Iceberg
The knurling of the mountain comes to a point at the top of the peaks. This knurling provides excellent grip, but can be difficult to maintain during a long training session.
volcano
The volcano's jagged has a slight bulge at the ends. The purpose of Volcano knurling is to provide excellent grip and reduce stress from sharp edges, such as those found on mountain saws.
Department
Flat (or bumpy) knurling is flat on top. It is the softest on the skin but offers the least support. The flat tooth is often found on cheap dumbbells.
