How to Choose the Right PEX Extension Tool?
1. Manual or electric?
There are two types of PEX expansion tools: manual and electric. Hand flaring tools feature a flaring head and a long handle that slides back and forth to open and close the flaring head.
Since the tool is cumbersome, it doesn't come with a cable to connect to the power supply. These are also cheaper options compared to their electric counterparts.
PEX expansion power tools, on the other hand, work with the help of an electric motor built into the tool.
No force needs to be applied instead of pulling the trigger and the engine starts. Some expandable power tools work with a cord, while others work without one.
The choice of operating mode depends on your needs. If you need to get things done quickly, it's a good idea to use the advanced PEX extension tool, and if you're on a budget, you can opt for the manual tool.
2. Build quality
The best PEX expansion tool for your particular purpose has to have exceptional build quality, otherwise why bother buying one?
Regardless of the type of expansion tool, it must bestronger than PEX pipeso that the hose can expand properly. If the material is strong, you can use the expanding tool for years.
You also want the material to be corrosion resistant, especially if you work in wet areas.
3. Extension Headers
This is an important aspect to look out for in a PEX extension tool. Extension headers are the only variables to work withPipes of different sizes.
The PEX expansion tool can come with two, three or even more expansion heads, allowing you to cover different types of jobs that require different sizes of pipe.
When purchasing a PEX stretching tool, make sure it comes with the head size you need.
4. Tool ergonomics
The ergonomics of an expanding tool is also a crucial aspect that determines your comfort. Hand tools consist of a long handle and if you intend to use this type of tool, make sure it has a firm grip that will prevent slipping.
In addition, the handle should also provide comfort when holding it, so that your hand does not hurt after pressing the handle for a long time.
Expandable power tools should also have a comfortable grip that lets you keep going until your job is done. Also, the overall design of the tool should provide convenience so you can easily work in those hard-to-reach places.
5. Weight
A tool should never be too heavy to strain a muscle. You'll find that most PEX extension tools are lightweight, but that doesn't always mean the quality is subpar. In addition, a heavy tool is not always heavy.
Supporting the perfect balance between weight and quality, the PEX extension tool is what you should be looking for.
6. Portability
If you travel a lot, you'll appreciate that your PEX expander tool comes with a carrying case. Extension toolkits usually come in a carrying case that is compact in design.
What you should look for in the case is whether it's tough enough to withstand accidental drops. If it is stable, items stored in it will not be damaged.
7. Additional Articles
When you buy a PEX expansion tool set, you'll likely get additional items like a pipe cutter, deburring tool, or pipe grease.
The items included in an extension toolkit vary from set to set. So if you can find one that has all the things you need, go for it!

How are PEX extension connections made?
It's easy to make PEX connections with an extension tool. These are the steps you can take.

Step 1 - Measure the length of the PEX pipe
If you haven't cut the PEX pipe to the required length, take measurements first. Measure the length of the pipe with a tape measure and mark the pipe with a black sharp marker.
Step 2 - Cut the PEX pipe
After marking the area, take yoursPEX-Schneiderand cut along the line. Make sure you cut it straight or you will have trouble inserting an accessory.
Step 3: Slide the extension ring
Take the expansion ring and slide it over the PEX pipe. If the ring has a stop edge you will know when to stop and if there is no stop edge don't move the ring more than 1mm. Make sure both the ring and the PEX tube are dry.
Step 4 - Attach the expander head
Lightly oil the cone of the flare tool to allow for a smooth flare. Then attach the appropriate expander head for the pipe size. Be sure to screw it down.
Step 5 - Expand the PEX tubing
Hold the hose in one hand and the flare tool in the other. Insert the expander head into the pipe. Press and hold the trigger until the tube expands.
The number of flares depends on the size of the PEX pipe, the technique and the weather conditions. If you live in colder regions, the hose will have to expand more as it becomes less flexible.
Use:Always do the right number of stretches and avoid overstretchingPEX-Rohr.
Step 6 - Insert the accessories
Insert the fitting into the pipeand push until you can't go any further. The expansion ring contracts and fixes the connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do you need a PEX expander?

FAQs
Which type of PEX fitting is best? ›
PEX-A, which has the most flexible tubing and best freeze- and kink resistance, is ideal for use with kitchen and bath fixtures. PEX-B is slightly less flexible and less freeze-resistant.
Is PEX expansion or crimp better? ›PEX crimp equipment is a lot more affordable than the expansion kits. However, despite the pricing and form shortcomings, most plumbers prefer to work with expansion because installation is more efficient. There are fewer leaks, and it also seems to be more durable against extreme colds and frozen pipes, etc.
How many times can you expand PEX? ›PEX-a's elastic memory means it can expand up to three times its diameter and then shrink back down to its original size.
What color PEX is best? ›There are no performance differences between red, white, blue and white PEX and all are intended for use in potable water systems. The colors can be used to easily distinguish between hot and cold distribution lines.
Is it better to bend PEX or use fittings? ›1. Use PEX bend supports instead of elbows. Bend support allows to make a 90-degree turn with PEX tubing without the need for a fitting.
Can you over expand PEX? ›Ensure the piping and ring seat against the shoulder of the fitting. Important! You should feel some resistance as the fitting goes into the piping. If you do not feel any resistance, the piping may be over expanded and will require additional time to shrink over the fitting.
How much will PEX expand before bursting? ›If the weather gets cold enough, PEX pipes can and will freeze like any plumbing. However, PEX may be less likely to rupture as a result of freezing. When PEX tubing undergoes temperature changes — whether hot or cold — its first response is to expand. In some cases, this can be up to three times the tubing's diameter.
Should I use brass or poly PEX fittings? ›Due to the problem earlier caused by polybutylene (PEX predecessors) plastic PEX fitting have been recommended. It is true that in areas where water is less acidic, brass fitting is better. But in areas where water is acidic or easily contaminated, plastic fittings are better.
Do PEX-A and PEX B use different fittings? ›Can any PEX fittings be used with PEX-A or PEX-B pipe? Apollo PEX-A (Expansion PEX) pipe can be used with Apollo PEX-A or Apollo PEX-B fittings, brass and poly alloy. Apollo PEX-B pipe cannot be used with PEX-A fittings.
Is type A or B PEX better? ›Flexibility - PEX-A is the most flexible, allowing for it to be fastened by cold expansion, which allows the end to be fluted prior to inserting the fitting. PEX B is not expandable and you should never expand the end of a PEX-B pipe. Kink-Resistance - PEX-A has the greatest resistance, PEX-B the lowest.
