Disadvantages of technology in our private lives

Let's start by listing some of the ways technology can affect our personal lives, good habits, and careers.

1. Procrastination and distraction

How often do you check your cell phone every day? 20 times? 50 times?

(Video) The Advantages & Disadvantages of Technology | Future of Technology

If you are an average American, check your phone in an incomprehensible way344 times a day. (Once every four minutes, by the way.)

To be fair, the British aren't doing much better. In 2021 we will spend on average4.8 hours a daywith mobile apps. that's completethirdour waking hours!

What's the point of While our phones can be incredibly useful, they can also distract us from more important things like work, school, or taking care of our family.

It's also very easy to open a chat app, start a mobile game or watch the latest episode of your favorite show. Unless you have incredible willpower (which, let's be honest, most of us don't), you can open the door to procrastination and missing deadlines.

2. Digital addiction

As a society, we waste an enormous amount of time on the latest gadgets and gizmos.

But the problem runs much deeper than a missed deadline or a sleepless night.

Now we are so dependent on our digital devices that we hardly (or maybe even could) function.impossiblework) without it.

Think of all the information stored on your phone: contact information, personal photos, passwords, etc. Now, if you lost your phone, who would you call? How many phone numbers and addresses have you memorized?

GPS and Sat Nav are incredibly useful, but when we overuse them, we can also get incredibly, well...scam. the message is literalfull of storiesfrom people who can't give directions to someone who asks for a waypoint in sight without using Google Maps.

Worse yet, GPS can lead us or our vehicles onto the wrong road and into a dangerous place, putting our lives at risk.

This is just one example of how one of the biggest disadvantages of technology is the excessive dependence on devices.

3. Technology addiction

Closely related to the last point is the issue of digital addiction. This falls into one of thefive main categories:

  • Computer or gaming addiction

  • Addiction to cybersex and pornography

  • Compulsive search for information.

  • Online Relationship Searches

  • Compulsive spending or gambling online

Like other types of addiction, technology addiction can have a serious impact on a person's daily life.

Excessive use can jeopardize studies, jobs, finances, and relationships, especially if the person begins to lie or tries to "cover up" how long they spend with the addiction.

Spending a lot of time with electronic devices can also lead to a variety of physical, mental, and emotional health problems.

Headaches, eyestrain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and weight changes are common consequences, along with anxiety, depression, dishonesty, and mood swings.

Disadvantages of technology for our social life

What impact can technology have on our social lives? Let's look at some of the ways technology can wreak havoc on our relationships with our friends, family, and employers.

4. Loneliness and social isolation

Email, SMS and the Internet have becomeMarketed in 1995. Facebook was born in 2004 and the first iPhone was launched in 2007.

With so many ways to stay in touch, we should all feel happier and more connected to our friends and family than ever before... right?

Experts say otherwise. A 2017 study found a direct link between loneliness and social media use.

Young adults who spent the most time on social media werethree times more likelythey feel more socially isolated than those who have used it less.

As one psychologist put it: “Those who replace online relationships with real relationships do not see a reduction in loneliness and may even see a deterioration” in their thoughts and feelings.

What do you think? Are feelings of loneliness a serious cause for concern?

Consider this: loneliness costs British employers£2.5 billioneach year due to lower productivity, sick leave and higher turnover rates. This is because chronic loneliness contributes to a variety of physical and mental health problems.

5. Precariousness and loss of employment

Without a doubt, there are some great benefits of technology when it comes to our jobs.

For example, at the height of the pandemic,60% of adultsin the UK they were working from home, something that would have been unthinkable just a few decades ago.

But along with these advantages come some major disadvantages of the technology.

As technology advances, human workers are worth less and less. Companies can install a chatbot or build an automated robot that does the work of 10 human workers, often faster, more efficient, and less expensive.

Employers no longer have to hire skilled workers in their own country and pay high wages.

It is now possible to outsource "cheap" labor in the form of remote workers from developing countries to perform essentially the same tasks at a fraction of the price.

That's great news for growing companies, but terrible news for an employee when their skills become redundant and they lose their job.

Unfortunately for many of us, this is becoming a reality as experts predict that robots will take over.20 million jobsfor the year 2030.

One example is driving and delivery jobs, which will become redundant as autonomous vehicles become more popular.

6. Plagiarism and Piracy

Modern technology means that we literally have a world of information at our fingertips.

Anything we want to know or find is just a few clicks away.

Of course, there are advantages to having all these digital media readily available, but there are also serious technological disadvantages.

For example, students no longer have to "learn" anything if they don't want to. You can copy and paste everything from math formulas to homework to long research papers and present the work as your own.

The same applies to all kinds ofintellectual property. It's getting harder and harder for creative people to make a living because once your work is online, it's essentially "available" to anyone who wants it.

It is virtually impossible (not to mention expensive and legally demanding) to track down every thief or pirate who steals a creative project.

The entertainment industry has also learned that the spread of digital media cannot be controlled.

Copyright laws are difficult to enforce as techies are always finding ways to copy, reproduce and distribute music and movies.

The bad of technology for society

The downsides of technology are not just personal. Let's see how technology affects human society as a whole, from communication to security and business relationships.

7. Privacy issues and security threats

All personal information about us exists on the Internet. Our bank details, our vehicle registration document, our medical records, our personal passwords: it's all there.

With all the advances in cybersecurity, like two-factor authentication and password encryption, we should feel safe when storing our information online.

Unfortunately, this does not correspond to reality. The typical computer is attackedonce every 39 seconds, the 2,244 timesevery day. Antivirus programs do a good job of stopping some of these attacks, but millions of people fall victim to phishing scams and hacking attacks each year.

In the USA,one in four peoplepersonal data has been stolen by hackers or you have been a victim of identity theft.

Meanwhile, in the first half of 2021 alone, British companiesLost £1.3 billionon cybercrime and online fraud.

The numbers speak for themselves: Despite our best efforts, our personal data in the digital world is never 100% "secure."

8. Depersonalized war and mass destruction

A few hundred years ago, soldiers would ride into battle and attack their enemies with swords, arrows, or rifles. Fast forward to World War II, wheremore than 200,000 people diedof the two atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

War has always been an atrocity, nothing new, but technology has removed the "human" element from war. Governments can deploy weapons and launch an attack from anywhere in the world without having a single soldier on the ground.

Military drones have essentially turned war into a video game. From a safe distance, thousands of miles away, a controller can attack and kill people with an unmanned drone.

Meanwhile, the military uses satellite imagery to monitor enemy forces. ICBMs have the ability to track and hit specific landmarks in a foreign country.

In addition to the emotional disconnection of long-distance warfare, another downside to technology is its impact on the environment. Nuclear power plants, exploding bombs and other advanced technologies are devastating the ecosystem and may evenmake zones uninhabitable.

9. Environmental damage

A nuclear explosion during a war is an extreme example of technology damaging the environment. But most of the damage done to our planet comes from the daily and benign use of technology.

Most machines and devices contain at least some parts that are toxic or non-biodegradable.

For example, if you don't recycle a simple battery, it will end up in a landfill. Over time, it corrodes and releases toxic chemicals into the soil and water. Lithium batteries can even cause firesburn for yearsunderground!

Almost all types of technology also require a power source to function. It is true that society is moving towards cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy sources. But for now we arefleefeeding the planet with fossil fuels to keep our technology running.

10. Fake personas and anonymity

Behind a digital wall, anyone can become whatever they want. Or at least they canto appearbe whatever they want to be.

Modern technology makes it easy for users to hide their true identities. They are not afraid of getting caught, which leads them to take greater risks and engage in more dangerous behavior.

One example is the rise of cyberbullying. a man from great britainrecently made headlineswith 10 arrests for cyberstalking 62 different women in an 11-year period.

How did he manage to get away with it for so long? Simple: she posed as a nice young woman offering privileged information about the victim's life.

Behind the cloak of the Internet, cyberbullying is also a serious downside of technology.37% of childrenin the UK have been victims of cyberbullying, while 60% admit to having witnessed abusive behavior online towards one of their peers.

Even more worrisome is that pedophiles can use technology to hide their identities and prey on innocent children. Reports estimate that 500,000 predators go online every day andmore than 80% of sexual crimesStart on social media.

Will we overcome these technological handicaps?

It is safe to say that most of the technological advances have yielded positive results.

Among other things, we can communicate more efficiently, share global events quickly, address medical issues more efficiently, and so on!

However, neither can we ignore the problems that new technologies bring to society.

By making yourself knowndisadvantages of the technique, we have a better chance of detecting and solving small problems before they become big ones.
